The novel begins in Czechoslovakia in the early s when Zoli, a young Roma girl, is six years old. The fascist Hlinka guards had driven most of her people out onto the frozen lake and forced them to stay there until the spring, when the ice cracked and everyone drowned - Zoli's parents, brothers and sisters. Now she and her grandfather head off in search of a 'company'. Zoli, a student in Hungary between the world wars, struggles for his education against poverty, his father's displeasure, and his own pride. Sharpened by the world of books, which is often frowned upon in the Romani tradition, Zoli becomes the poster girl for a brave new world. As she shapes the ancient songs to her times, she finds her gift embraced by the Gypsy people and savored by a /5(87).

About Zoli. “Soaring and stumbling over decades of midcentury Eastern Europe, Zoli is a riveting novel.”—Gail Caldwell, Boston Sunday Globe “McCann affirms with Zoli, his fourth novel, that he is a writer with a method and a mission/5(23).

The central character in his latest novel is Zoli, an exotic singer and poet steeped in her ancient Gypsy traditions. Most of the novel is told in Zoli's words, beginning with her indelible memories of her family being killed by fascist Hlinka guards when she was 6, their carts driven out onto cracking lake ice.

Zoli is based very loosely on the true story of the Gypsy poet, Papusza, who was sentenced to a Life of Pollution by her fellow Roma when a Polish intellectual published her poems. But McCann has turned this into so much more – it’s a brilliantly written work that brings the culture and the time to life, an incredibly rich story about betrayal and redemption, and storytelling in all its.

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Zoli; A Gypsy girl in Czechoslovakia is banished by her people after becoming a famous poet. Marienka Novotna, better known as Zoli, is a Gypsy girl born in the late 's in Czechoslovakia.

She is 6 years old when her family. In the tradition of Steinbeck, Coetzee, and Ondaatje, McCann finds the art inherent in social and political history, while vividly depicting how far one gifted woman must journey to find where she /5(17). Zoli eventually becomes a shining example of this new "literary proletariat" with their revolutionary right to reclaim the written word.

But disillusionment soon sets in at the inevitable bleakness and inflexibility of the communist regime, with the country eventually turning sour and losing its edge: "Our cures were so much less powerful than our wounds.". In “Zoli,” a novel about the Gypsies of Eastern Europe, Colum McCann imagines a deeper, darker watchword for this immemorially wandering and persecuted people: to be understood, even in part.

Zoli () About book: I enjoyed this a lot for its window on Romany (“Gypsy”) culture in Slovakia from the 30’s to the 50’s and its portrait of the life of a fictional poet trying to put a voice to her people. “A” for the effort by an American author in trying to portray such a girl and woman from a first person perspective, but “B” for not quite succeeding in making her come.

The book serves as a ready reckoner for Biochemistry as far as objective pattern is concerned. I feel satisfied if the book serves the purpose for which it is intended.

I have tried to minimize typographical errors but still some must have crept in. If they are brought to my notice, I will be rectifying them in the next edition.
